What Happens Next Month?

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. CUGOL celebrates the occasion by having a picnic at our July meeting. The library will be closed on Saturday, July 3, so our meeting will be on Saturday, July 10,
At the June 5th meeting, we will plan our July luncheon. CUGOL will provide barbeque, place settings, and table covers. Members are invited to bring other items to complete our meal. There will be a sign-up sheet passed around for other items to make the party a success.

Digital Camera Tips

Formatting SD disks

The little SD disk in a digital camera works the same as any storage device. You write to it, erase it, and then write to it again. A camera card could have one picture or a hundred.
It eventually gets clogged with leftover data. With a hard drive, you defragment it to clean it up. (Formatting it erases everything.).
Your camera disk needs to be formatted frequently. You should not use your computer to do this. The camera itself can format the disk so that it matches the camera's own system.
Different cameras use slightly different ways to do this, but look for a menu item called "format". This will clean the disk. If not sure, check the owner's manual.
There are software programs that claim to do clean your disk, and some claim to recover pictures from a formatted disk. It's safer to store the pictures in two or more places.

Rule of Thirds

You will improve your pictures if you use what the professional photographers call "the rule of thirds". Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid being placed over the shot (#). Place your main subject on the lines or at an intersection. This will make your pictures more interesting. For more information, go to Bing or Google .and enter "Rule of Thirds". If you select "web" you will get text; if you select images, you will get samples of the Rule of Thirds.
